Dow Jones Indices, DRW and Marex Bring Wall Street Swaps to Canton

Key Takeaways

Wall Street Derivatives Meet Blockchain Infrastructure

On Tuesday, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the firms leveraged blockchain technology, specifically the Canton Network, to conduct a traditional Wall Street derivatives transaction. The transaction involved a total return swap, which is a financial agreement that allows one party to receive the investment performance of an asset or index without actually owning it. The other party agrees to make those payments under the contract’s terms.

“This transaction shows how established benchmark infrastructure can support new institutional market structures,” Cameron Drinkwater, chief product operating officer at S&P DJI, explained in the release.

S&P DJI has been in the space for quite some time, first entering the blockchain space at the end of 2020. At that time, the firm partnered with Lukka, a New York City-based crypto asset software and data company, to build cryptocurrency indexing capabilities. S&P DJI believes the transfer unveiled Tuesday demonstrates how these operations can be harmonized via a mutual blockchain framework rather than depending on multiple distinct networks.

One connected system can access market data, manage the rights to use that data, record the terms of a derivatives contract, and calculate its value over time. “Derivnex gives counterparties a common digital representation of a trade from affirmation through its full lifecycle,” Derivnex CEO George Harrington remarked.

The Derivnex executive added:

“Completing the first OTC swap on Canton shows how that model can work in a live institutional market.”

Canton Draws Wall Street Heavyweights With Privacy-First, Compliant Design

Since launch, major financial institutions have adopted Canton Network technology because it is designed to meet their strict privacy and regulatory requirements. Unlike public blockchains, where transaction details are broadly visible, Canton allows firms to control exactly who can see specific information, even within the same transaction.

At the same time, it lets different financial applications communicate and coordinate transactions, including completing related payments and asset transfers together or not at all. This gives institutions the privacy they need without isolating them in separate systems that cannot easily work together.

While S&P DJI is leveraging Canton, other heavyweight firms like Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Nasdaq, DTCC, JPMorgan, and the payments giant Visa are playing with its compliant onchain infrastructure as well.
