Samsung reportedly plans to give the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 five major OS upgrades, extending its smartwatch commitment by one generation. The policy would add one major upgrade to Samsung’s previous smartwatch commitment.
SamMobile reported the change on July 22, 2026. Samsung’s launch materials confirm the two watches and their software but do not mention five major upgrades or identify which older models, if any, will receive the same support.
Organizations comparing the new watches with the Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, or original Galaxy Watch Ultra still lack a model-by-model support timeline. Until Samsung publishes model-specific terms, buyers should not assume those watches qualify for a fifth upgrade.
Five upgrades would extend the Watch 9 lifecycle
The original support report says the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 will receive five major OS upgrades and five years of security patches. Both watches debuted with Wear OS 7 and Samsung’s One UI 9 Watch interface.
Samsung’s official launch specifications confirm Wear OS 7 and One UI 9 Watch but do not state an upgrade count or support deadline. As of July 29, the five-upgrade policy remains reported rather than formally documented.
Major platform upgrades and security updates follow separate tracks. OS upgrades can introduce new features, interfaces, application programming interfaces, and management options. Security fixes may arrive on a different schedule.
Samsung’s previous support commitment promised four generations of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades for the Galaxy Watch 4 series and future eligible models. Availability and timing could vary by device and hardware capability.
Samsung has previously left Galaxy Watch feature compatibility unresolved during software rollouts. A model-level eligibility list would clarify whether the fifth upgrade is exclusive to the 2026 watches.
Google guarantees Pixel Watch software updates for at least three years after each model first becomes available through the Google Store in the United States. Those updates include security improvements and may include OS updates and new features, making Google’s time-based policy different from Samsung’s reported version-based commitment.
Longer support sharpens lifecycle planning
Longer platform support can simplify purchasing and refresh decisions, especially when a major release can drop several older smartwatch models at once. It does not, however, guarantee that a watch will remain secure, manageable, or compliant throughout that period.
IT teams must also track security-patch frequency, application compatibility, management requirements, internal policies, and regulatory obligations. Mixed-generation fleets may require separate upgrade schedules if Samsung limits the fifth OS upgrade to the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
Organizations should record each watch’s model, Wear OS version, patch level, and published support terms. They should also avoid treating 2031 as a confirmed deadline: Samsung has not named the final Wear OS version or issued an official end-of-support date.
Until Samsung publishes those details, older watches should remain on their existing support assumptions, and procurement teams should not revise refresh plans solely because of the new report.
