Bitcoin ETFs Own Just 8.5% of BTC as IBIT Ends a Two-Day Outflow Run: Can BTC USD Hold $79,200?

by Amy Lyman

BTC USD traded near $79,700 on Tuesday, October 27, after U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $110.3 million on Monday, ending a two-day, $773.4 million outflow run a day before the Federal Reserve’s rate decision. All of it went into one fund: BlackRock’s IBIT.

The flows look small next to the coins the funds track. A new chart from River shows that funds and ETFs hold only 8.5% of the Bitcoin that can still trade, against 79.6% for individuals.

So why do a few hundred million dollars in ETF flows still move the price, and which levels matter before Wednesday?

How Much Did Bitcoin ETFs Buy and Sell in October?

Less than they sold. Counting Monday, the funds are about $202 million in net outflows for October, after 18 trading days that split almost evenly between buying days and selling days.

The swings were big for a month that went nowhere. The funds took in $526.6 million on October 19, led by $665.2 million into IBIT, and $528.4 million on October 21. Then they lost $635.5 million on October 22, the largest one-day outflow since June 2025, and another $137.9 million on Friday, with IBIT, Fidelity’s FBTC and ARK’s ARKB leading the selling.

Monday’s bounce came from one place. SoSoValue’s figures show IBIT took all $110.34 million, and none of the other eleven funds added money. The twelve funds now hold $102.84 billion, about 6.4% of Bitcoin’s market capitalisation.

Who Owns Bitcoin? River’s Chart Puts ETFs at 8.5%

Mostly individuals. River’s breakdown gives individuals 79.6% of Bitcoin, once Satoshi’s coins, lost coins, and the supply not yet mined are left out. Businesses hold 9.4%, funds and ETFs 8.5%, and governments 2.5%.

No other major asset looks like that. Funds and ETFs hold 37.4% of U.S. stocks and 28.2% of bonds. Individuals own 47.4% of the gold that isn’t jewelry or industrial metal, but central banks hold another 38.7%.

That small share is exactly why the ETF figures matter. Most coins held by individuals sit still for months, while ETF demand arrives every trading day and has to be met with spot Bitcoin. The funds act as the marginal buyer, and on days like October 22, the marginal seller.

BTC USD Price Analysis: Can Bitcoin Hold $79,200?

So far, yes. Bitcoin tested the $79,221 to $79,370 area on Saturday and again on Monday, and buyers stepped in both times. It now trades near $79,700, below its 50-day EMA at $80,756, a line it lost on Sunday and has not won back.

Resistance sits at $81,480, where last week’s bounces stalled, and then at $82,850. On the downside, $79,221, Saturday’s low, is the line to watch. Below it, the 200-day EMA at $76,380 is the next floor, about 4% lower.

Market Cap

Scenario What it takes Where BTC could go
Breakout A daily close above $81,480 $82,850, last week’s ceiling
Range Holding between $79,221 and $81,480 Back and forth around the 50-day EMA at $80,756
Breakdown A daily close below $79,221 $76,380, the 200-day EMA

The Fed announces its decision on Wednesday at 18:00 UTC. If ETF buying spreads beyond IBIT after it, BTC USD has a path back above the 50-day EMA; if the October 22 selling returns, $79,221 is unlikely to hold a third time.
